SCHRAM NETS OVERTIME-WINNER IN 3-2 VICTORY OVER GREECE
Jan 16, 2025For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center of the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
Alexander Schram gave the Portside Royals (7-5-0) a 3-2 victory with 3:28 left in overtime on Tuesday night at SUNY Brockport over the Greece Storm (5-7-0) in this week’s High School Game of the Week. The contest also served as the Hometown Heroes Night, with both teams wearing specialty jerseys.
The win gives Portside a 3-1-0 record in the head-to-head series against Greece since the start of the 2021-22 season. The Royals have outshot the Storm 146-121 over the past four games while each of the last two have been decided beyond regulation.
Along with Schram’s game-clinching marker, Alex Bagnato and Justin Pastorella both lit the lamp with a goal each during the first period. Cole Laffin, Landen Christ, and Jonah Wyant all chipped in an assist, including Laffin’s first of the campaign. Goaltender Danny Kucmerowski evened his record on the season to 5-5-0 as he made 28 saves of the 30 shots he faced in his 10th appearance.
Carter Griffin, who entered Tuesday’s matchup topping all Greece players in both assists and points, chipped in two goals to grab a share of the team-lead with six. Alex Rink, Jayden Gargana and Camden Monks all recorded an assist in the defeat while netminder Stratos Triantafilou (3-5-0) drew his eighth start of the slate. Triantafilou made 34 saves.
In a back-and-forth first period as each team was unable to score on its first powerplay of the night, Portside struck twice in nearly three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Bagnato kicked off the scoring from Laffin with 6:51 in the first before Christ doubled the lead after being set up by Wyant with 3:57 to play.
Midway through the second stanza and trailing by a pair, Greece appeared to cut the deficit in half on a power play, however the goal was ruled no goal. The Storm responded immediately after the call as Griffin scored his first of the frame from Rink and Gargana while on the man-advantage.
After netting his first with 8:19 left in the frame, Griffin tallied his second in the final 30 seconds from Monks to even the score going into the final stanza.
While neither team was able to secure the win in the final period of regulation, both teams used strong goaltending and penalty kill, the game remained deadlocked at two as the horn sounded.
Greece began the extra-frame on the power play, however, was unable to beat Kucmerowski. After the Royals successfully cleared off the infraction, Schram sealed the 3-2 victory with 3:28 left on the clock.
The Storm will look to snap their losing skid as they travel to face Batavia Notre Dame United on Thursday, Jan. 16 for a 7:00 p.m. tilt at Lakeshore East. The Royals, meanwhile, look to continue their three-game win streak on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:00 p.m. as they take on Spartan Hockey at Genesee Valley.
