PITTSFORD ROLLS TO 5-1 WIN OVER CANANDAIGUA

Jan 18, 2024

For the next few months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center of the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.

Four different players produced a multi-point effort as the Pittsford Panthers (9-2-1) recorded a 5-1 victory over the Canandaigua Academy Braves (6-5-2) Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.

With the win, Pittsford’s ninth of the campaign, the Panthers maintain a share of the top spot in the MCPSAC standings as they have 19 points. Eight of the Panthers’ wins have come while the club has served as the home team, which is most in the standings. Pittsford earned its third straight win against Canandaigua Academy following a 5-1 score last season and a 6-3 victory in 2021-22. During the three contests, the Panthers outshot the Braves 87-38.

Leading point-getter Brady McMahon added two goals while Peter Yarovinsky (1+1), David Pollard (1+1), and Simon George (0+2) netted a pair of assists for Pittsford. Keehan Ahern (0+1) and Bradley Pollard (0+1) both recorded an assist while Drew Ricketts scored a goal to complete the scoring.

Goaltender Wilson Szydlo pushed his record to 6-0-0 as he stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced in his eighth appearance of the season. Apart from one game earlier this season, Szydlo has allowed one or fewer goals in six games.

Brady Spinosa scored one goal from Alex Chen and DJ Spychalski for Canandaigua. Much like all season, netminder Charlie Fuller drew the start, his 13th of the slate. Fuller made 21 saves but took the defeat.

In the opening frame, McMahon opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally from Bradley Pollard to give Pittsford a 1-0 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first period. The Braves responded just over four minutes later to even the score on Spinosa’s marker.

After the intermission break, the Panthers reclaimed their lead on McMahon’s second of the contest before Pittsford used a three-goal run in a 3:36 span to grab a 5-1 lead just prior to the end of the period.

Ricketts kicked off the sequence as he tallied a power-play goal before Yarovinsky and David Pollard closed out the scoring.

Canandaigua looks to rebound as they host Aquinas for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff on Friday, Jan. 19 at Canandaigua Civic Center. Pittsford will eye its 10th victory of the slate as they head to Tim Horton’s Iceplex and will welcome Victor on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
