HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK: WFL VS. AQUINAS
Feb 7, 2024For the last several weeks, the Rochester Americans have been front and center on the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that featuring the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
The final High School Game of the Week features the WFL Panthers (5-9-4) traveling to face Aquinas Institute (7-10-2) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Lakeshore Arena.
Aquinas is looking to earn its fifth win against the Panthers since the start of the 2022-23 campaign as they boast a 4-0-1 record over the span. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie just eight days ago despite Aquinas outshooting WFL 63-29.
Aquinas, which has a 2-2-2 mark over its previous six games dating back to Jan. 19, tops the league with 199 penalty minutes going into Wednesday’s final regular season matchup.
Of the 24 skaters used this season by Aquinas, 16 different have registered at least a point while 11 have notched a goal.
Mike Dossier (39) and Connor Carey (31) top the team in goals (19) while both have reached the 30-point mark, respectively. Tyler Day (21), Ares Miller (17), Caleb Wood (15), and Ryan Carmody (12) have also recorded double figures in points.
Regan Gray (6-10-2) has taken over the goaltending duties this season after making three saves in one appearance in 2022-23. In 18 games in 2023-24, Gray shows a .845 save percentage and 4.40 goals-against average while making 420 saves.
Armin Salimi (1-0-0) has appeared in a pair of contests, making 48 saves while Owen Shannon has yet to make his season debut.
Aquinas is led by head coach Chuck Dossier and assistant coaches Alex Carey, Ryan Shannon, Marciano Chinappi and Anthony Bianchi.
WFL is looking to get back in the win column following a pair of losses and two ties. Prior to the winless streak starting on Jan. 22, the Panthers outscored the opposition 10-2 in their two previous games. The Panthers show a 2-5-2 mark when serving as the home club this season and are 3-4-2 on the road.
Colin Trapiss paces all WFL skaters in goals (15), assists (11) and points (26) while Clark Mauchly (10) has reached double figures in goals this season. Besides Trapiss and Mauchly, Jack McCormack (17), Ryan Allen (11), Sean Allen (11), Isaac Pundt (11) and Trevor Delmarle (10) have 10 or more points this season.
Of the 19 players to appear in a game this season for WFL, 15 with at least one point and 13 have tallied a goal.
The Panthers have used a trio of goaltenders with Jace Ingram (2-6-1) and Seth Taylor (3-2-3) handling most of the duties. While Ingram has made 360 saves in 10 appearances, Taylor has posted one shutout in eight games. Nathan Zimmerman (0-1-0) has stopped 48 shots in two contests.
WFL is led by head coach Francis Shaw and assistant coach Zac Akin.
Following Wednesday's matchup, WFL will close out its regular season on Friday, Feb. 9 against Canandaigua Academy at Canandaigua Civic Center for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
