Dec 10, 2024By Ryan J. Harr
For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center on the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
This week’s High School Game of the Week pits the Fairport Red Raiders (0-2-0) hosting Spartan Hockey of Gates-Chili (1-2-0) on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Genesee Valley Ice Arena.
The Red Raiders, who have claimed four section titles since the start of 2000, are looking for their first win of the 2024-25 campaign after suffering a pair of defeats in their first two games of the season.
During last season’s meeting against Gates-Chili, Fairport built a 2-0 lead early in the second period before holding off a late push for a 4-3 victory on Dec. 12, 2023.
Fairport returns five of its top eight point-getters from the 2023-24 season in Marc Hillier (7+8), Mitchell Monte (4+7), Jack Gosiewski (4+3), Andrew Crowley (4+3), and Nick Rene (3+4) as they combined for 47 points (22+25).
Nick Rene (3+0), Corey Rene (2+1), and Hillier (1+2) top all Fairport skaters as they have skated in both contests this season while Garrett Martin and Thomas Edwards each notched one goal apiece.
Goaltenders Kyle Donohue (1-2) and Cameron McClenin both return to the goal crease this season for the Red Raiders, but only had three combined appearances prior to the start of campaign.
Donohue has handled all the duties through the first two games this season, as he shows a 0-2-0 record to go with an .852 save percentage.
Head coach Chris Moretter, who was named Section V DI Coach of the Year in 2019, leads the Red Raiders for his 19th season.
After having suffered 4-3 and 3-1 defeats to begin its campaign, Gates-Chili responded this past Saturday as they earned a 5-1 victory over Hamburg, which featured 11 different players registering at least one point.
Last season, the Spartans showed a 7-10-3 record, which included a 6-3-2 mark on home ice, and recorded 125 penalty minutes that were the second-fewest in all Section V.
Matt Turner and Parker Monette both returned from last season’s roster as they ranked first and second on the club with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while skating in all 20 games. Turner’s 12 assists from the blueline finished first on the team while Monette tied for the team-lead in goals (8) with Sunday Oliver, who also returned to the roster this season.
Through the first three games of the 2024-25 slate, Nick Maslowski has a team-best four points (3+1) after only tallying six (4+2) all last year. Zach Fennell (1+2), Oliver (1+0), Ryan Prsuak (1+1), Turner (1+1), Evan Stewart (1+1), and AJ Parker (1+0) all have scored once apiece while Wyatt Flannery has chipped in three helpers.
Goaltenders Logan Swartzenberg (1-0-0) and Grady Emo (0-1-0) both have seen time in-between the pipes this season after they combined for a 7-10-3 record last season. Swartzenberg enters today with a .900 save percentage in two appearances whereas Emo sports an .893 mark in that regard. Evan Farrell and Tyler Harrington have yet to make their season debuts in the net for Gates-Chili.
Head coach Joe Jehlen leads the Spartans for his 20th season while Brian Kleemann and Glenn Pittman serve as assistant coaches
