FIVE-GOAL THIRD-PERIOD PROPELS PENFIELD TO 7-2 WIN OVER GATES-CHILI
Jan 24, 2024For the last several weeks, the Rochester Americans have once again been front and center on the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores, and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
Five unanswered goals in the third period proved to be the difference as the Penfield Patriots cruised to a 7-2 victory over Gates-Chili Monday night at The Blue Cross Arena.
With the win, Penfield’s fourth straight and 11th of the campaign, shows an 11-4-0 record through 15 games this season. The Patriots’ 11 victories, six of which have come on the road, are most in the MCPSAC as well as their 73 goals scored.
Angelo Latore (2+3) and Sean Walsh (2+1) combined for four goals, four assists and eight points. Bobby Kane (1+2), Corey Weiss (0+2), Thomas Obstarczyk (0+2) all registered a multi-point outing. Mason Maksymiu (1+0), Wesley Makysmiu (1+0), Rory Gately (0+1), Ethan Muroski (0+1), and Travis Bush (0+1) completed the scoring with one point each.
Goaltender Thomas Herman pushed his record to 11-4-0 as he stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced in his 15th appearance of the slate. Apart from a 4-2 defeat back on Jan. 13, Herman has won eight of his last nine decisions.
Parker Monette and Mason Wright both scored for Spartan Hockey while Mason Davey added an assist. Netminder Grady Emo (1-7-2) drew his 10th start, and despite making 36 saves, he suffered the defeat.
Following a scoreless opening period, Penfield grabbed a 2-0 lead in the middle frame as Mason Maksymiu and Latore scored nearly three minutes apart.
Monette closed out the period by converting a setup by Davey before Wright evened the score at 2-2 early in the third period.
On the ensuing shift, Wright countered the goal to restore Penfield’s lead before he added a second marker three minutes later to double the lead.
Holding a 4-2 advantage midway through the third period, Kane and Latore teamed up on each other’s goals before Welsey Maksymiu sealed the five-goal run and the 7-2 victory for the Patriots.
Penfield will try to make it five straight wins as they host Adirondack on Friday, Jan. 26 at Webster Ice Arena at 6:00 p.m. while Spartan Hockey faces Adirondack at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Genesee Valley.
