UNDEFEATED ON THE WEEKEND
The Buffalo Sabres' prospects dominated the Prospects Challenge at LECOM Harborcenter: they went 3-0 against the prospects from Montreal, New Jersey, and Ottawa. Led by two two-goal games from Tyson Kozak, and with a big impact from the Rousek-Kulich-Rosen line, the Sabres outscored opponents 17-10 over the weekend.
Head Coach Seth Appert noted that this was an excellent way for the organization to start the season, and hopes that it really sets the tone. "We're really proud of them," Appert said in the post-game press conference.
OSKARI LAAKSONEN TAKES ON LEADERSHIP ROLE
While this was Oskari Laaksonen's third Prospects Challenge, this year he wanted to embrace a new role: being the leader for the younger players. His goal was to be someone they could depend on throughout the weekend.
Both Coach Appert and Coach Weber praised Laaksonen's leadership throughout the Prospects Challenge, noting that he was always the loudest one on the ice.
KULICH IMPRESSES IN TWO GAMES
Initially sidelined with a nagging injury, Jiri Kulich made his Prospects Challenge debut in the Sabres' 7-4 win over the Devils on Saturday night. He centered a line between Lukas Rousek and Isak Rosen — a line that could certainly see ice time in Rochester this season — and the chemistry was immediate.
Amerks head coach Seth Appert described Kulich's play as dynamic: “He’s an elite player. Carries himself like that. Looks like it on the ice."
KOZAK SHINES WITH FOUR GOALS
A standout on the scoresheet throughout the weekend was Tyson Kozak, who the Buffalo Sabres selected in the 7th round of the 2021 NHL Draft. Tallying two two-goal games, Kozak made up for lost time after an injury held him out of Prospects Challenge last summer.
After the game, Coach Appert kept it simple: “He’s just a very useful hockey player.” And he mentioned that Kozak is a player that he'd love to coach, which is a distinct possibility in Rochester this season.
