HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK: HILTON VS. CANANDAIGUA

For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center of local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that featured the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area. 

This week’s High School Game of the Week features the first-placed Hilton Central Cadets (8-1-0) meeting the Canandaigua Academy Braves (3-5-0-0) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Canandaigua Civic Center.

The Cadets, who have won six straight and eight of their last nine, are looking to claim their first section title in school history as they currently sit atop the standings. Hilton has comeback in each of the last three meetings against the Braves as they show a win and two ties, which includes a 3-2 score in December of 2023. The club also produced a 4-3 overtime victory back on Feb. 5, 2022.

Through its first nine games of the 2024-25 season, Hilton has logged three shutouts and two nine-goal outings while also outscoring the opposition 52-14. Except for a 4-2 setback to Pittsford and a 5-4 victory over Irondequoit earlier in the campaign, the Cadets have allowed two or fewer goals in their remaining seven contests.

Alternate captain Cameron Stewart tops all Cadets with a team-leading 12 goals and 22 points while Casey Hanrahan (8+11) and Hunter Hutterman (7+5) have also reached double figures in points. Aiden Kennedy (4+5), who serves as captain alongside Phil Fiorella, Gannon Driscoll (4+5) and Andrew Paolini (4+1) all have scored four goals apiece. Mason Knight (2+4), Cameron Gebo (2+2) each have netted a pair while Matthew Sidoti (1+3), Jack Palmer (1+2), Josh Anstett (1+1) and Parker Smith (1+0) have lit the lamp once. Lucas Grizzanti concludes the scoring list with five.

Goaltenders Barrett Paolini (6-0-0) enters the tilt as the only undefeated netminder in Section V as he sports a 6-0-0 mark, two shutouts, 1.33 goals-against-average through six appearances. Lennon Suplicki (2-1-0) has allowed five goals three contests for a 1.67 goals-against-average while both he and Paolini each have a .947 save percentage.

Head coach Chris Monfiletto leads the Cadets as he joined by assistant coach Dave Messbaurer. Braden Burr, Logan Driscoll, Joey Schneider, Jayden Reger and Jayden Teetse all serve as managers.

After starting the season with three straight victories, Canandaigua Academy has dropped its last five contests, including four games where they scored three or more goals. The Braves have not defeated the Cadets since the two schools started their head-to-head series ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

Canandaigua Academy, who is searching for its first back-to-back seasons with a .500 winning percentage or better since the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, also is aiming for its first win on home ice in 2024-25. All three of the Braves’ victories on the slate have come while they have been designated as the home team.  

Maddox Smith (14), Karl Warren (12), and Alex Chen (11) all have reached double digits in points while both Smith and Chen have scored five times along with Gavin Nemitz (5+3). Christian Stasko (3+2), Arthur Fuller (3+2), and Dominic Holmes (2+3) each have five points apiece while Dylan Green has found the back of the net three times. Garrett Richards (0+3), Zachary Hoffman (0+1), Ian Duncan (0+1), and Ethan Tumbiolo (0+1) conclude the point getters for the Braves.

Matthew Ulrich (3-5-0) has handled all the goaltending duties through the first eight games of the season. Quetin Shedrick and Brooks Baxter are both looking to make their season-debuts.

Head coach David Taft leads Canandaigua Academy while Zander Pryor and Austin Wharry serve as assistant coaches.
