For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will once again be front and center on the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
Gates-Chili (2-2-0) carried a 3-0 lead going into the final period of Tuesday’s matchup at Genesee Valley Ice Arena as they cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Fairport Red Raiders.
With the victory, Spartan Hockey has produced back-to-back wins after dropping its first two contests of the season. The club has scored five goals in each of their victories while having 10 or more different players record at least one point in both games.
Nick Maslowski (1+1) recorded a two-point outing in Tuesday's victory while Sunday Oliver, Matt Turner, Evan Stewart, and Colin Mancuso all registered one goal each. Zach Fennell, Anthony Gianvecchio, Cole Flannery, Ryan Prusak, and Parker Monette concluded the scoring as they all had one assist.
Goaltender Grady Emo (1-1-0) evened his record as he made 30 saves on 32 shots faced in his second appearance of the campaign. Emo was named the Player of the Game for his performance.
The Red Raiders suffered their third consecutive defeat to begin the season after going 10-9-0 last season.
Jameson Pierandri and Corey Rene both scored in Tuesday's contest while Kevin Paiement was credited with the team’s only assist. Netminder Cameron McClenin made 35 saves in his varsity debut but suffered the defeat.
While Fairport had an early opportunity to kick start the scoring on a breakaway as well as power-play, Gates-Chili’s Maslowski tallied the first goal of the slate as he finished off a rebound with 6:13 left in the opening frame. Mancuso and Flannery provided the helpers on the lone marker of the frame.
Carrying a 1-0 lead into the middle stanza, Grady made another big save before Turner’s unassisted goal seconds after a power-play doubled Spartan Hockey’s lead just 3:37 into the period.
Just over two minutes after making it a two-goal game, Sunday was set-up on a fast break by Prusak and Monette with 11:51 left in the period.
Both teams were called for a pair of penalties in the final 11-plus minutes, but the score remained a 3-0 lead for Gates-Cili at the conclusion of the second period.
While Fairport got on the board 2:32 into the final period of regulation with Rene’s tally on the man-advantage, Stewart restored the three-goal cushion with 11:22 to play.
The clubs exchanged shorthanded and power-play goals, respectively, in less than 30 seconds of one another before the final horn sounded, giving Spartan Hockey the 5-2 win.
The Red Raiders will look to find the win column on Saturday, Dec. 14 when they host Batavia Notre Dame United at Rochester Ice Arena for a 1:30 p.m. matchup. Meanwhile, Gates-Chili will look for its third straight win as they take on Brighton/HFL/Eastridge on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a noon contest at Genesee Valley Arena.
