FROZEN FRONTIER JERSEYS FOR AMERKS AND MONSTERS UNVEILEDNews | 11/11/2013 3:11:19 PM | ROCHESTER AMERICANS
The Rochester Americans unveiled today the special-edition jerseys that will be worn for the outdoor game between the Amerks and Cleveland’s Lake Erie Monsters on Friday, Dec. 13 as part of the Greater Rochester Area Honda Dealers Frozen Frontier presented by Labatt.
The Amerks will wear a sweater based off ones worn by the team during the 1957-58 and 1958-59 seasons, Rochester’s second and third years in the American Hockey League. The cream-colored jersey features a royal blue band around the center of the chest and back, with the word, “Americans” stitched inside the band in white lettering on the front. There are also 16 red stars on the chest, shoulders and upper back, along with a red collar and lace-up neck. The back of the sweater features red jersey numbers while there is also royal blue trim along the cuffs and at the bottom of the jersey.
The jerseys that Lake Erie will wear for the Frozen Frontier game were inspired by the ones worn by the Cleveland Barons during the Barons’ first year in the American Hockey League, which was 1937. The sweaters are blue with a thick tan band, outlined in black, around the center of the chest, back and arms, with a thinner tan line below it on the body and arms of the sweater. The word, “Cleveland” appears in black lettering on the front of the jersey inside the top tan band. The left shoulder features a white Lake Erie Monsters logo, while a white Colorado Avalanche logo appears on the right shoulder to represent the Monsters’ NHL affiliate. There is also a tan and black collar and lace-up neck.
The Amerks and Barons were longtime American Hockey League rivals, as Cleveland was an original AHL franchise and went on to win nine Calder Cup championships. The Amerks and Barons twice met in the Calder Cup Finals, with Cleveland winning in 1957 and Rochester taking home the Cup in 1966. Rochester’s first-ever game was against the Barons as the teams met on Oct. 14, 1956 at the Rochester War Memorial and played to a 2-2 tie. The current incarnation of professional hockey in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters, have been members of the AHL since 2007.
In honor of Veterans Day, the Amerks and Monsters Frozen Frontier jerseys were unveiled during a pregame ceremonial puck drop featuring military veterans from the OASIS Adaptive Sports ice skating program, which is a program designed to assist disabled military veterans in reconnecting and resuming productive lives in society through participation in recreational activities that promote independence, and social and emotional well-being. The Rochester Americans and Amerks Alumni Association have supported the local OASIS ice skating program since its inception.
