Drew MacIntyre plays BINGO

There’s nothing more refreshing to sports fans than witnessing their favorite athletes step away from their daily routines of training and competing to spend time with members of the community, particularly children.  Last Thursday, four members of the Rochester Americans had the opportunity to do just that.

Having expressed interest in making a hospital visit earlier this season, Amerks players Drew MacIntyre, Alex Biega, Travis Turnbull and Derek Whitmore were able to clear their schedules and pop into the Golisano Children’s Hospital for the afternoon.

Assuming that they were done competing for the day after having practiced earlier in the morning, the four players were in for a treat when they came to find they would be participating in a weekly BINGO session with a group of the hospital’s young patients.  A dozen kids had gathered in the activity room to meet the Amerks and win some prizes playing BINGO.  What a joy it was to see these kids play and interact with these professional athletes.

With cheers and applause at each kids’ victory (everyone wins), it was nice to know that even for a few hours, these patients were able to have fun and focus on something other than their illness.  The Amerks may not have been the best BINGO players, but at least for a few hours, they were a good distraction.

Where’s Moose?: The Amerks’ longtime mascot, the Moose, has kept busy in recent weeks by stopping by various charity functions and youth hockey programs to meet fans.

This past Sunday, he participated in The Wolf Foundation’s “Strikes For Abilities” event alongside former Amerk stars such as Jody Gage, Geordie Robertson and Scott Metcalfe, to bowl a few games and raise money for a great cause.

The previous weekend, he stopped by Scottsville Ice Arena to check out its March Madness Mite Tournament on Saturday before participating in Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual walk event on Sunday outside The Blue Cross Arena.

Over the last several weeks, the Moose also joined Amerks players in meeting fans at the team’s Season Ticket Holder Skate and Wendy’s Skate with the Players events.  In between, he managed to check out the Try Hockey For Free session at Thomas Creek Ice Arena and a “Pizza Throwdown” at Uno Chicago Grill, an event that benefitted the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Moose next time you’re out and about in the community!
